Fluorspar and Slag Fluidity: Optimizing the EAF Charge

Fluorspar — calcium fluoride, CaF2 — remains one of the most effective fluxes for controlling slag in the electric arc furnace. Its job is to lower slag viscosity, which improves slag mobility, deslagging of the vessel, and the rate of desulfurization by keeping the slag fluid enough to react. In a well-run EAF, the amount and timing of fluorspar are a deliberate lever on both yield and campaign.

The mechanism is straightforward: fluoride ions break up the viscous silicate network in the slag, dropping viscosity enough that the slag flows, reacts, and removes itself more readily. That same fluidity helps the slag carry impurities and keeps the metal-slag interface active during the reducing phase. For a mill chasing lower sulfur and cleaner steel, a small, well-timed fluorspar addition can be worth more than a larger one added at the wrong time.

The trade-off is environmental and operational. Fluoride escapes through the off-gas as HF and dust, so plants — and their environmental regimes — have real reasons to minimize fluorspar use and to capture what is released. The direction of travel in the industry is toward lower-fluoride slag practice, which means fluorspar is increasingly used as a targeted tool rather than a blanket additive, and paired with other fluxes that do some of the same work.

That pairing is where lime and dolomite dolime come in. Quicklime sets the basicity that drives desulfurization, while dolime contributes magnesium to saturate the slag and protect the refractory. Getting the lime, dolime, and fluorspar balance right lets a mill hold the slag fluid and basic with less fluoride than a lime-only, fluorspar-heavy practice. The result is better desulfurization, slower refractory wear, and a smaller off-gas fluoride burden.

For buyers and melt shops, the practical guidance is to treat fluorspar as a precision flux: specify a clean, high-CaF2 grade, add it in the right phase, and use it in a balanced charge with lime and dolime rather than as the primary slag agent. Used that way, fluorspar delivers its fluidity benefit while the charge as a whole moves in the direction the industry needs it to go.
