Dolomite Dolime for Ladle Slag Conditioning at a Flat-Rolling Mill

Challenge:

The mill needed to raise slag MgO saturation to protect the ladle refractory and improve slag fluidity, but inconsistent lime-only fluxing gave variable basicity and refractory wear that shortened campaigns.

Solution:

We supplied dolomite dolime blended with lime to target a controlled slag basicity and MgO level, with documentation on each lot and a steady delivery schedule matched to ladle practice.

Result:

Slag behavior became more consistent, refractory erosion in the ladle crown slowed, and the mill extended its campaign length while keeping basicity on target.

A flat-rolling mill running a continuous ladle practice found that fluxing with lime alone gave inconsistent slag basicity, and the resulting under-saturated slag was eroding the magnesia refractory in the ladle crown. Campaign lengths were shortening and the mill wanted a more stable, MgO-saturated slag without losing control over basicity.

We supplied dolomite dolime — a magnesium-bearing flux — to be blended with lime so the slag could be brought to a controlled MgO saturation level alongside the target basicity. Each lot shipped with documentation, and delivery was scheduled to match the mill’s ladle practice so the blend was always on hand. A small amount of fluorspar was used where the mill wanted to tune slag fluidity without over-increasing basicity.

The mill reported that slag behavior became noticeably more consistent from heat to heat, and that refractory erosion in the crown slowed as the slag moved toward saturation. Basicity stayed on target, and the combination of a stable slag and reduced refractory wear allowed the mill to extend its campaign length — a direct saving on both fluxing and refractory replacement.
