A specialty steel producer manufacturing vanadium-microalloyed grades for structural applications was struggling with their cored wire injection process. The wire they sourced from their previous supplier had inconsistent outer diameter and variable core fill density, which caused frequent feeding jams in the wire injection machine and unpredictable alloy recovery rates. Each jam required a costly production stop, and the composition scatter in their final heats was pushing them outside customer specification limits on vanadium content.

We supplied cored wire manufactured to tight diameter tolerances with verified core content for both vanadium nitride and carbon additives. Each coil was tested for uniformity of core fill and coating thickness before shipment. In addition, our technical team worked with the producer’s melt shop engineers to optimize injection depth, speed, and argon stirring parameters to maximize alloy dissolution and recovery under their specific ladle conditions.

Wire feeding reliability improved to above 99%, virtually eliminating jam-related production stops. More importantly, the consistent wire quality combined with the adjusted injection parameters pushed vanadium recovery rates upward, allowing the producer to reduce their target addition by a measurable margin while still meeting the lower end of the specification range. The tighter composition control has enabled the producer to bid on higher-grade contracts that require narrow vanadium windows in the final chemistry.
